Personal Experiences
We would like to share our patients' experience of our heroin detox center as proof of our commitment to helping those suffering from addiction. Read their stories below.
In her own words Jo from Hertfordshire describes her own personal experience of Detox 5.
"I was a heroin and 'crack' cocaine addict for 11 years, I was so desperate to start living again and stop the cycle of just surviving to use, and using to survive. It got to a point when I just didn't want to wake up anymore, I knew something had to 'give' and it was either me and the kids - or the drugs.
I had been in to detox units before, about 6 in total throughout my using years. I had heard of 'Detox5' but never thought it was possible for someone like me, with such huge levels of addiction, to get clean in such a short space of time. However, I needed to get off this never ending rollercoaster and fast, so I got a loan from my family, gave 'Detox5' a call, and was in within 2 weeks.
The detox itself, is a bit of a blur to be honest, I had periods in and out of consciousness, I know I was very poorly at times, but as I say I did have a big habit and I knew that it was not going to be easy.
The staff were always kind, patient and sympathetic and I just had to trust that they had done the process many times and that it would all be ok in the end. It was not as bad as some detoxes I have done, they managed my symptoms and made me comfortable, which is as much as a person can really expect.
Life for me now has taken a complete 360 degree turn, I have just 'celebrated' my 2nd year of being clean, with my new fiancé, plus the kids. I am in my 2nd year of a BA (Hons) Degree. I never ever thought I could do it, especially as quickly as I have - life is fantastic.
The things that definitely helped were the Naltrexone implants. This detox is hard - they all are. But with the implant, the cravings are not there, which makes it easier when you return home and try to pick up the pieces, and NO, I was never once tempted to test the implants' effectiveness! I initially paid for 2 lots of implants, but felt I needed a 3rd , just to make sure, I was ok on my own - in the real world. It has paid off, but it does take hard work, focus and time - if I can do it, anyone can!"
C Smith from Birmingham describes her own personal experience as the mother of someone who has recovered from heroin addiction with the help of Detox 5.
"My son had been on heroin for 11 years, resorting to stealing and crime to fund his habit. We had tried to help him but he always went back to the drugs. Our life was a nightmare; I was petrified that one morning I would go in and find him dead.
When he himself had had enough, he started looking into the Detox 5 programme but our doctor couldn't fund it. When he asked me to help him I was reluctant at first as we had tried before but eventually I got a loan and he went to the clinic for 5 days.
Since then we haven't looked back - that was 4 years ago and my son has never used any drug since. The first few weeks were hard for all of us, but we didn't give up and the aftercare team were very supportive.
I struggled to pay off the loan but it's finished now and I'm so glad we decided to help him or I don't think he would be here now.
I have my son back thanks to the Detox 5 team and my son's determination. I feel for all families of drug users - we were lucky, we came out the other end."
