Bio-psychosocial assessment & exclusion criteria
The needs of service users with an addiction are varied and so any admission or exclusion criteria are only a guide and are subject to a final assessment on the day of admission to the program. We assess people on an individual basis, and ask for a medical history prior to arranging admission. The program ordinarily requires some sedation; due to a decade of experience we can tailor care packages to create a more wakeful detoxification to meet the needs of most service users to provide a safe and comfortable detoxification. However some service users may be excluded on the grounds of concomitant medical or psychological conditions.
People are invited to attend for an assessment and are made aware that they are not guaranteed an admission at this point. From the time of the client’s arrival to them being sedated can take several hours. They are shown to their individual, en-suite room on arrival and made comfortable.
The nursing team will take a full history, measure all base line vital signs, and explain the care plan and the client journey. The names of identified callers will be taken and logged in the case notes, needing a password to enquire by phone. Mobile phones are not permitted on the unit, and visitors can not return until collecting the client.
The Medical Officer will do a full physical examination and the Consultant Psychiatrist will take a full bio-psychosocial history and assessment before co-ordinating all the information and deciding whether or not the programme is appropriate for the individual. If so, the consultant will prescribe a medication regime and the person will sign consent to treatment.
We do not carry out a drug screen on the client but encourage them to be open and honest with us in order for them to get the medical and nursing plans they need to ensure a comfortable detox.
People having a wakeful detox will experience long wakeful periods; will sleep at night and will eat, drink and mobilise throughout the day. They will be given adequate symptomatic control to ensure their comfort throughout the day.
Reasons for a wakeful detox include:
- Low BMI
- High BMI
- Diet / Tablet controlled Diabetes
- Warfarin therapy
- Respiratory Diseases
- High degrees of physical disability
Medical conditions that would preclude Detox 5 altogether:
- Organic Brain Disease
- Cardiac Disease
- Insulin dependent Diabetes
- Pregnancy
- Uninvestigated seizures
- Significant Brain Disease
