What We Treat
Detox 5 specialises in the treament of addiction to opiates
Opiates are narcotic drugs which are derived from the opium poppy; the most common ones are morphine, diamorphine (heroin) and codeine. Synthetic opiates are known as opioids; the most common of which is methadone.
The medical use for opiates is in the treatment of pain. They are very effective painkillers but require medical supervision.
Repeated use leads to tolerance (needing to increase the dose and/or take more frequently) and dependence (being unable to stop taking the drug). Physical complications include sedation, nausea and vomiting, constipation and lethargy.
People use and misuse opiates to treat their physical and emotional pain. If dependence has developed, they seek help to address this.

Other addictions
Detox 5 can also help people who are addicted to opiates and another substance, e.g. alcohol or who have underlying mental health problems. In addition to our 5-day opiate detox programme our Detox 5 Extra service offers 12 and 19-day admissions where the concomitant addiction or mental health problem can be addressed safely following the opiate detoxification.
Detox 5 is based at Cygnet Hospital Harrogate and is part of Cygnet Health Care, a national provider of outpatient and inpatient psychiatric services for private and NHS funded patients. Cygnet Hospital Harrogate can provide different treatment options for a whole range of addictions.
In addition to our specialised 7-day alcohol detox programme we can also offer different treatment options for addictions to gambling, sex, shopping or non-opiate substances such as cocaine and cannabis.
