Heroin and morphine linked to over half of drug related deaths in Scotland

BBC News reports that over half of drug related deaths in Scotland in 2009 were linked to heroin or morphine. There were 545 drug-related deaths in Scotland in 2009. Despite being a drop compared to the previous year it is still the second highest on record. The heroin substitute methadone was also linked to a high number of deaths.

Top doctor calls for drugs law review

BBC News reports that the outgoing president of the Royal College of Physicians, Sir Ian Gilmore, has said that decriminalising drug use could drastically reduce crime and improve health. In response a Home Office spokesman has said that the government's aim is to help addicts come off drugs for good rather than decriminalising drugs.

MHRA issues addiction warning on over the counter medicines

The Nursing Times reports that the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRSA) have announced plans to label packs of over the counter medicines containing codeine and dihydrocodeine with new warnings about the risk of addiction.

Drop in Afghan opium production

BBC News reports that a UN led survey has found that poppy cultivation and opium production in Afghanistan has fallen sharply. In its 'Afghan Opium Survey 2009' the UN Office on Drugs and Crime says poppy cultivation has dropped by 22% and opium production by 10% in the last year.

Female drug deaths 'rise by 17%'

BBC News reports that the Office for National Statistics has released figures showing that the number of women dying drug-related deaths in England and Wales rose by 17% in 2008 compared to 2007. The number of male deaths rose by 8% compared with 2007 and is the highest total since 2001.
