One of the first elements of an admission is clarifying the referral of a GP or medical professional for our patient.

Without this participation, we cannot provide the ongoing medical aftercare necessary for our method of opiate detoxification. However, we understand that not every GP may be aware of our programme and the way we use Naltrexone to give opiate users an opportunity to completely recover from their addictions. Why use Detox 5?

Who is using Detox 5?

Our patients have no demographic or geographic boundaries. We admit patients from the UK, and further afield from around the world. We have successfully treated patients from all social spheres, economic backgrounds, races and religions. We find that our services are particularly attractive to the following categories of candidate:

• Patients having experienced painful, unsuccessful previous treatment
• Patients looking to minimise awareness of withdrawal symptoms during detox
• Patients looking for isolation from other users and complete confidentiality
• Patients that will benefit from a holistic approach, including the close proximity of family members
• Patients looking for a recovery programme with minimum impact to 'daily life'; a 5-day programme
• Patients that will benefit from the Naltrexone implant, rather than orally administered post-treatment medication
• Young opiate abusers being referred by a concerned family member
• Older opiate abusers, or methadone addicts, who - quite simply - want to get their life back

Why involve a GP?

The involvement of a professional able to prescribe Naltrexone is key to the Detox 5 recovery programme. The Naltrexone used during the 5 - 7 day intensive phase (an initial 25mg challenge dose), is followed up by a short course of medication to offer continuation of care, but a course of 12 months' prescription is vital to give the patient optimum recovery possibilities.

How do I know my patient is a good candidate for referral?

When we talk to a patient about admission, we are looking for four key things that - together - mean optimum treatment. We look for your co-operation, as a medical professional; we assess the availability and involvement of an aftercare network (such as drug counselling or local support; we can advise on both), we insist on immediate support from a responsible family member or close friend to monitor daily medication - and we look for commitment from the patient. With these four elements in place, you have an ideal candidate for Detox 5. We will ask our patient to bring you a bespoke referral form for your convenience.

I don't know enough about your service…

We are delighted to offer an Open Day service to health professionals. On a regular basis, and by appointment if you require an individual meeting, you can visit our clinic and see our work in person. We will have our liaison team and our medical professionals on hand to show you the facilities, and will be happy to explain the processes and answer any questions you may have.
